After a dedicated campaign spearheaded by Survival International, in which over 30,000 people have written the Brazilian Justice Minister, victory has come to the Awá tribe. It’s been weeks now since I wrote about this and the outcome is heartening. They have in effect won. Though still facing threats from exponentially expanding illegal settlements and logging, a federal judge has ordered the giant Brazilian mining company, Vale, to suspend its planned expansion of a rail line in northern Brazil, noting that it would endanger the livelihood of the Awá people.
